Square Enix, a Japanese AAA game developer and publisher, has announced the release of Symbiogenesis, a new series of NFT-based games. The Ethereum-based experience will benefit from the use of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) as art, which users can set as profile pictures and use in a separate NFT marketplace.

Symbiogenesis NFT Project Announced by Square Enix

One of the leading Japanese game companies, Square Enix, has announced Symbiogenesis, one of the first NFT-based interactive experiences. Square Enix finally solved the mystery surrounding the game, which was thought to be related to the Parasite Eve franchise by name, as part of the company's participation in the India Game Developers Conference on November 3.

Square Enix, on the other hand, revealed that the game's premise is quite different. The upcoming experience will center on a series of "symbiotic" character relationships that can be collected as digital art in the form of NFTs. These artistic NFTs will play characters in the story, completing a series of quests based on the themes of "monopoly and resource distribution."

Square Enix has stated that the game's blockchain element for Symbiogenesis will be Ethereum NFT. The game will be available in the spring of 2023.

Commitment to Square Enix Web3

While this is the company's first project built from the ground up with Web3 in mind, Square Enix is one of the few traditional AAA game companies to express support for this type of decentralized element in gaming.

As part of a recent partnership with Oasys, a Japanese Web3 gaming blockchain project, the company has announced that it is open to exploring blockchain game development. Square Enix is also a validator for the Oasys blockchain, which is currently launching its mainnet.

Square Enix announced in May that it would consider launching new IPs that include NFTs as part of its world-building elements, incorporating blockchain into its business strategy. These statements are consistent with the Symbiogenesis explanation.

The company's primary franchises have also been chosen as themes for future NFT products. As part of the franchise's 25th anniversary celebrations, Square Enix announced in July that it would release an top NFT collection of the blockbuster Final Fantasy VII. These will be transmitted over the Enjin-powered Efinity network.
