"We're probably not close to adding crypto as a payment mechanism in our retail business, but I do believe that over time. You'll see crypto become bigger". Then Jassy added, speaking after releasing his first annual shareholder letter since succeeding Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Amazon has previously expressed interest in cryptocurrencies. It was looking for a digital currency and blockchain expert to join. Its payments team last year to help develop Amazon's "strategy and product roadmap" for the new technologies.
"I expect NFTs to grow very significantly in years." Jassy said on Thursday.
He stated that he can see a future in which the e-commerce giant sells NFTs. NFTs are digital assets whose ownership is recorded on a blockchain, such as digital art, music, a website domain, or digital texts.
"I think it is possible on the platform in the future," Jassy said.
NFTs have grown in popularity in the last year. Also the technology has some similarities with cryptocurrency enthusiasts. According to Nonfungible.com, trading in NFTs reached $17.6 billion last year, a 21,000 percent increase from 2020.
