American astronaut Scott Kelly sees blockchain as having a lot of potential. He believes that it will one day help with space development.
Following the success of celebrities, athletes, and politicians in the nonfungible token craze, the growing industry has enlisted the help of a veteran astronaut to share his time in space via NFTs.
Scott Kelly, a retired US astronaut, told he has a "growing curiosity" about blockchain technology and NFTs. Kelly claims that he has been watching blockchain for six years and has seen its potential.
"I've grown increasingly curious about how it will play a role in space development, which is something I'd love to be a part of," Kelly said. As a result, the astronaut wanted to meet the NFT community and give back to the community.
Kelly's space journey is reimagined through several digital artworks in the veteran spaceman's new NFT collection, "Dreams Out of This World." The drop sold 3,333 NFTs and raised $500,000 for the nonprofit Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), which will help people affected by Ukraine's war:
"The Ukraine crisis is very close to my heart, which is why we will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the initial sale through GEM to Ukrainian relief."
While Kelly acknowledges that there are many other ways to help, the astronaut is grateful that launching an NFT collection allowed him to assist victims of the disaster. "I'm grateful to be launching a project at a time when I can support them in ways I wouldn't have been able to do on my own," Kelly said.
Kelly also hopes that his foray into the world of NFTs will inspire other astronauts to do the same. He stated:
"NFTs can provide astronauts with a new outlet for sharing their experiences, rather than posting them on the internet, where they can quickly get lost in the shuffle."
Meanwhile, Reli3f, a Web3 initiative, raised $1.5 million for Ukrainian aid efforts. The project raised funds for various charities. They are focusing on the Ukrainian crisis through its second NFT collection.
