Brendan Dawes returns to MakersPlace with a brand new series that will be debuted at Bang & Olufsen’s SoHo NYC showroom on May 2nd. RSVP here: https://lu.ma/yp0paqhd. Brendan Dawes’ latest series, In Harmony: The Five Boroughs, presents five generative 3D sculptures resembling coral reefs made of rare earth metals. These digital sculptures are characterized by fine filaments - whose colors are informed by environmental factors related to their respective neighborhoods - that unfurl in smoke-like whorling formations, emanating from crystalline clusters. Through a cocktail of code, and various digital and analogue materials, Dawes explores the interplay between objects, technology, art and humanity. In this series, the gilded reefs are built from text and data, both abstract representations of our actual experiences, in this case an NYC boroughs' name and data related to population density. The most dominant factor in a New Yorker’s lived experience is population density, which affects every aspect of life, from the price of rent to the difficulty of getting from one place to another. It also is the breeding ground for serendipity and exposure to a great many cultures and worldviews. Dawes takes the data that create the circumstances of life and abstracts it, creating a serene, organic piece. We can appreciate this otherworldly sculpture for itself. We might also reflect on a worldview that sees even the most frustrating aspects of life — like the cramped quarters of our everyday existence — with an aestheticized love, as Dawes reflects and re-enchants that reality. Minted on the artist’s own Manifold contract and available exclusively on MakersPlace, each of the five unique animated works in the collection includes a signed print with a Verisart NFC/QR tag linking to a certificate of authenticity.
